First, we want to say congratulations on the birth of your child! What an exciting moment in your life!
"Baptism in the church is one of the two sacraments we as protestants hold dear. It is the official commitment and entrance into the life of the church.
Your interest in Baptism is one of many choices parents consider after having a new baby and that you recognize your blessed responsibility in nurturing the spiritual development of this life entrusted to your care.
Baptism in the United Church of Christ is a sacrament, so we take your decision to baptize your child as a sacred and serious decision. We would like to share that this decision is yours to make. Children have a very special place in the life of our church family and we take great delight in every opportunity to receive a child through the waters of Baptism in the name of the Holy Trinity.
However, as much as we want to welcome your child into the life of the church, this is a decision which only you can make. We ask that you prayerfully discern if you are ready to accept the responsibilities of Christian parenthood and that your sponsors (God Parent(s)) prayerfully discern as well. Part of a child being baptized in the church is that the active membership of the parent(s) in the life of the church. Both the parent(s) and God parent(s) attend classes in preparation for the special event in the life of your family and in the life of this family of God.
When an infant or young child is baptized, one or both parents and/or one or more sponsors, promise to assume certain responsibilities for the Christian nurture of the baptized child. We encourage active participation and membership in the church. If you are a interested in having your child baptized our pastor would love to talk to you!
